Maltese
Port Workers today joined other European Port Workers in a solidarity
strike and laid down their tools for an hour at The Grand Harbour and at
Malta Freeport.
The solidary strike was ordered by the International Dockworkers
Council (IDC) in support of the Portugese port workers in their fight
against the new Ports Law. The stoppage also coincided with the European
Ports Policy Review Conference which is meeting today in Brussels. The
conference is being organised by the European Commission.
Malta Dockers Union President Joe Saliba and Secretary Clinton Sammut
Union are participating in this conference, where they are opposing
attempts by the Commission to legislate European port labour services.
